Tips to care for and clean a leather bag

When you first buy a handmade leather bag you should treat it with a leather balm or protector. I like to use a product called Renapur. This leather balm is a blend of natural ingredients including beeswax and jojoba oils. Renapur gently feeds and moisturises the leather keeping it soft and supple, it also helps to waterproof the item making it a great choice for bags. Clean your bag regularly to keep it in the best condition possible. Use a damp cloth for a quick wipe down and to remove any dust and dirt. Then condition with a leather balm. I would suggest doing this every 2-3 months.

Only use specialist leather products to clean your handmade leather bag , never use baby wipes, vinegar or any home products. Beware of using hand cream before handling your bag as this can leave oily marks which stain and darken the leather.

To store your bag when not in use keep it in a dust bag or old pillowcase, stuff the bag with bubble wrap as this will help keep its shape.Then put it in a cool, dry place until you are ready to use it again. Bags that have been stored and have got damp may have a layer of mildew, this can easily be removed with a damp cloth. When throughly dry treat with a leather balm.

To avoid fading to your bag keep it out of direct sunlight as much as possible. Avoid excess heat as this can dry the leather out and cause it to crack. Don’t leave it in the car.

Make up and ink stains are the hardest thing to remove from leather. Always check your pen lids and make up before putting it in your bag. If you do have a spill then the best thing to do is, take the bag to be cleaned professionally.
